Bolin, [ Mako says again, a little more wheezily you are kind of crushing the life out of him here, bro. ] hard to marry my boyfriend if I can't breathe.
[But okay, fine. He relents. He relents and takes a breath and lets it out. Then another.
Bolin shakes his hands out, still jittery with excitement before finally sitting back down and engaging with brunch. The congee has gone cold. He sighs and holds it out for Mako to warm with unspoken thanks in anticipation.]
Mm... Also very different. The village I'm from is in the middle of a dense forest at the base of a mountain. It's a lot warmer than here so far. It's mostly made of wood and stone and the roofs are more... curved?
[ He tries to visualize it by moving his hands in the shape of a traditional Japanese building, but it probably just gets lost in translation. He lets his hands drop back down, wrinkling his forehead. ]
It's been a while since I've been home. It's hard to describe it. But it's greener everywhere and the water is cleaner and the air is easier to breathe.
[ Because Mako is Mako, he doesn't hesitate in accepting the bowl, pulls it close to himself and pushes heat into it like it's second nature. It... kind of is. ]
Well, get used to... fiancé, I guess. Or... husband. Wow.
[ Except it kind of is because of that. Because of him and Manabu and a little bit because things are finally settled. Mako ducks his head, his heart in his throat, smiling down at his bowl. ]
You, uh.
[ Spirits his voice is tight and rough. Mako clears his throat and it does nothing at all. He's so glad for the fact of Bolin, that his brother is here with him to witness this, that it isn't just him and Wu against the world. What would he do without Bolin there to make sure he remembers to enjoy his life, to drag him into the sun?
[It's a very emotional moment. Bolin is trying his best not to cry but his waterlines are sparkling a little as his smile grows and he nods. He is sure in the absolute because they are their parent's only legacy. And this is a golden moment that pushes back so many shadows of their youth.]
I know so. Because I am so proud of you.
We were never cut out to be gutter punks, Mako. This is way better.
[He sniffs and laughs, sitting up properly and wiping his eyes. Whooo boy, that sure snuck up on him.]
Oh- it um. Well I'm from Republic City. It's kind of a new city, very metropolitan. We've got theaters and markets and a probending arena. Super love the arena, lived there for years, highly recommend the view.
But there are some nice parks you're not supposed to fish in but totally can, and Air Temple Island is just across the way. That's where the Air Nomads live.
You know my mom was from The Fire Nation? That kinda sounds like your thing.
[ If he tells you that, bro, he's gonna ruin the mood, but... well, this is Bolin. Mako shoves the bowl back his way and lets out a little sigh, pulling a pancake closer to himself with his hands instead of chopsticks. ]
I don't know, bro, marriage wasn't really... something I thought I'd end up doing, you know?
[ Because he thought he wouldn't make it there, because he thought he'd burn fast and bright, because it was hard to think about the future in such broad and optimistic terms. Take your pick. ]
[Wow Mako. Dark. You almost burnt right out, didn't you.
He takes his bowl back with a nod of thanks, topping it as his brother speaks.]
That makes sense, it would have been hard to follow your heart back home. I'm glad that isn't a problem anymore. You know, for all the weird scary stuff that happens here I think we really are better off.
We do, yeah. A few.. but hearing what some of the other people around here say when they talk about home.. I think we're like. Behind in that? Time wise? We just got moving pictures, if that helps.
And uh.. yeah. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Republic City used to be Earth Nation but Avatar Aang declared it a melting pot for everyone regardless of their origin. That's one of the things that makes it so great.
so it's a small party a couple days before the wedding day that you throw without the fiancé! the idea's supposed to be a last hurrah before they get hitched to one person forever, but honestly it's just a night to celebrate just them.
tradition where I'm from is strippers and lots of alcohol, but it can be like anything you think Mako might want
[Since somehow that doesn't seem like Mako's kind of party.]
Well all the girls we're friends with are dating each other so in a way they're kind of in the boy's club? Sort of?
This reminds me of my friend Varrick's wedding. We had a party for him but we didn't call it that.
Well, he had a party and planned it exactly how he wanted it and then acted surprised when it happened. It was pretty wild. His wedding was super weird because everything was so unlike the customs I know about, even though I married them! And I've been engaged so I know about that stuff!
[ This is a return to safety a little bit. Mako can touch the bottom with his feet, anyway, feel more anchored. He chomps the lacy edge of another pancake. ]
Wu says the same thing. I mean, I get it. He'd never get to do any of this at home. Marrying the Earth King while he's still the Earth King?
